the single, simple paragraph is intended to introduce various possible explanations while establishing only one of many image criteria, image superficiality. This is used to rule out one possible explantion, dying. The implication is that the various explanations are viable. But there are many criteria. Most of the explanations do not meet even a few of the criteria. Some explanations are scientific while others are very unscientific. It is useful to summarize them in this way:
