Using a Bas-Relief
The second face image was uncovered with using advanced image enhancement techniques because the image was extremely faint and lost to view among the visual background noise. The most prominent background noise hiding the details is a random plaid pattern.
Researchers discovered that these patterns of alternating bands of darker and lighter threads in the cloth. Ancient linen was often manufactured by bleaching the thread in batches before weaving, thus producing nonuniform whiteness in the cloth.
